Lucia Ruz is a woman who has landed the job of her dreams. As editor-in-chief at Secret Escapes , she is responsible for the Spanish content that extols the alluring destinations reserved for members of this travel site. It is therefore not surprising that Lucia is passionate about this activity. In addition, she is equally motivated to discover new destinations around the world and ensure that her team loves her job as much as she does.

Where does your passion for travel come from?

I fell in baby. Since I was little, I travel a lot, both in Spain – my home country – and in the rest of the world with my family and friends. I have also lived in many countries and I am fully aware of how lucky I am to live my passion through my work.

How did you go about getting the job of your dreams?

I have lived in London for eight years and my experience in the media being mainly in the travel, I have always tried to make my livelihood, but especially I was in the right place at the right time. I was a member of Secret Escapes and I peeled all mails, all offers. While I was at home, I browsed the site and saw a job offer that extended my arms!

Previously, I had worked in various types of media – television, radio, newspapers and magazines – in several countries. It taught me how to adapt content to the public and the media. I also have a job promoting travel. All of this is handy when you lead a team and want to reach an audience.

What do you think is the biggest challenge in your job?

When I started, just before the launch of the site Secret Escapes in Spain. The team had to train quickly. But everyday, I think it’s a question of renewal, to keep fresh and attractive content. Our goal is to release a copy that invites people to go abroad and have fun.

In my team, we believe that the most powerful tools are words and images. On site, there are experts who are looking for the best hotels for our members, so we can offer the best deals – but it is our team that presents the offers to customers through our newsletters, our website, etc. .

How do you maintain the effectiveness of your team?

The people I work with are excellent writers and they are passionate about what they do. Writing in the tourism sector is something we like and if you like what you do then work becomes a pleasure! It’s very important to work with people who challenge you, but also that you like to work with, because in the end you spend a lot of time with your colleagues.

In the same way, the framework is very important. Working in a nice office with beautiful posters on the walls in a beautiful space with a nice view is essential to creating a positive atmosphere. You also want the right space for team meetings and with other people, a place for sharing friendly ideas. Getting to work each morning in an office you love makes a big difference.

Do you have a favorite destination?

I come from Spain and I must say that it is the most beautiful country in the world! Put by my native land, I would say Mexico. I lived there for a moment and I like everything: its history, its heritage, its culture, its landscapes, its beaches, its cuisine, its inhabitants and its markets. Really everything attracts me and I return at the slightest opportunity.

Tell us about a magical moment during your trips abroad.

I recently went to Indonesia and stayed in the Gili Islands, known for their marine biodiversity. As soon as I arrived, I felt like I was in paradise! After settling in my hotel room, I borrowed a bike available to guests, rented diving equipment and went to the beach. Two or three meters from the shore, you will discover extraordinary fish, giant tortoises and unimaginable coral reefs. I was like a kid who did not want to get out of the water and I spent hours swimming! I think traveling allows you to think of something else and enjoy the surroundings, the atmosphere and the nature around you.

Did your job teach you anything that really surprised you?

I think we learn something new every day. We work with many people from different countries and we are always surprised by the culture of each country and by the public from different regions. I’m not sure that this can be counted among the things I’ve learned, but learning what people in other countries like is very refreshing … and many of them love Spain!
